GPS holdover
Maintaining timing accuracy through extended loss of GPS.
What it is
Holdover is what a system does after the reference goes away. Every clock drifts; the question is how fast, how predictably, and how long a facility can keep operating before somebody has to intervene. A reference that drifts slowly and predictably turns an outage into an inconvenience. One that does not turns it into an incident.
The parts that hold well have usually been too large, too power-hungry or too delicate to put in the places that actually need them. Ours are built to sit inside the equipment rack, the cabinet or the vehicle, which is the difference between a capability that exists and a capability that gets deployed.

- Platforms and installations expected to keep working through denial of the signal, and to keep their records consistent with everyone else’s when it comes back.
- Data centers
- Distributed databases, matching engines and log correlation all rest on a bound on how far apart two machines’ clocks can be. A tighter bound that survives an outage is worth more than a tighter bound that does not.
